Sports Day
Most schools in England have a sports
day once a year, in the late spring or in the summer. As my school is in
London, in a place with no playing-field, we go to a special running track
which belongs to the London County Council.
The sports day is looked forward to by the whole school. On that day we have no lessons. We look at the sky every day for a week beforehand, hoping that it will be fine; even if we cannot have a real sunny day, at least we don’t want any rain.
We go to school on the day itself, the sky is blue with no clouds, but we take a mackintosh with us in case; we also take a packed lunch. Outside the school is a fleet of buses to take us to the field. It is half an hour’s ride.
When we arrive, all the competitors change into their sports clothes, shorts and shirts or vests, and the spectators find places on the sloping banks round the track, ready to cheer up their teams. The running track is circular and inside it, there are places for high jump, the long jump, throwing the discus and the hurdles races. All these events take place at the same time as the running, so there is plenty to watch. There is a large blackboard on which the results are chalked up for all to see, and as the day goes on it is possible to see which team is ahead or has the best chance of winning.
Our school is divided into six teams, or, as we call them, ‘houses’; each ‘house’ has a different colour and the competitors wear the colour of their ‘house’. The ‘house’ with the most points at the end of the day wins a trophy, either a shield or a cup.

Babylonia
The people of
Babylonia were rich and powerful. They were also happy. They loved each other
and they enjoyed working together. But men could live only on earth. Heaven was
for God and his angels.
The King of Babylonia decided that his people should have heaven, too.
So he ordered them to build a great tower. Six hundred thousand men began
making bricks and mixing mortar (будівельний розчин)
and putting up a building higher. All day every day men carried bricks and
mortar up a stairway on the west side of a tower. Then they walked down another
stairway on the west. This went on for forty – two years until the tower was
twenty – seven miles high. It was so high that it took a man a whole year to
carry bricks from the ground to the top.
Now the tower had risen nearly to heaven. And God saw he had to do
something. He sent seventy angels down to earth. The angels had orders: first
to take away the one language everybody understood, then to put the people into
groups with a new language in each group.
In no time the men who carried bricks couldn’t talk to the men who
carried them and the men who carried bricks couldn’t say an understandable word
to the men who laid the bricks. Everything was a mess, and everybody blamed
everybody else for not understanding. The people no longer talked about the
Tower of Heaven. The talked about the Tower of Babel, which meant the Tower of
Confusion. Their work came to a dead stop. The builders went away carrying
their new languages with them.
That is how it happened that different languages appeared in different

Where
is London Airport?
Last summer I got a letter from my Italian friend Giovanni. He said he
was coming to England, and he asked me to meet him at London airport on Friday,
June 25th at 5.30 a.m.
I wrote and told him to look for me at the airport. London airport (at
Heathrow) is quite a long way from the centre of London, but there are special
buses which come and go between the air terminal in Central London and the
airport outside London. But I live quite near the air terminal.
I went to bed at
9.30 on June 24th and I got up at 3 o’clock in the morning. I got
dressed in a hurry and walked to the air terminal. I bought a ticket and got on
the first bus to the airport.
The airport was
very big. There were several different buildings and they were full of shops
and airline offices and there were hundreds of people there, even early in the
morning. I did not know where to go. At last somebody took me to the Italian
airline office. The young lady told me there were no flights from Italy. I
showed her Giovanni’s letter. She asked me: ”Is your friend a student?”
“Yes,” - I said.
“Well,” - she said. “Students’ flights usually go to Luton Airport.” “Oh, dear,” – I said. “It’s a quarter
to five now. Can I get to Luton before 5.30?” “ No,” – she said.
“It’s too far away.”
I was very
unhappy. I took the next bus back to the air terminal and went back home. I got
very hungry on the bus. I was having breakfast when the telephone rang. It was
Giovanni. It was a good thing that I did not go to Luton Airport because
Giovanni was phoning me from Gatwick Airport. We agreed to meet at the
